Gonna Make It

Dear ones,

Today’s strategy is bringing hands-on creativity into the self-care mix. Sometimes a creative project is just what we need to feel energized, productive and delighted – regardless of what kinds of stressors or challenges we may be facing.

Research indicates that the creative act of making things – whether art, written works, crafts, food or other creations – has both immediate and long-term benefits for health and stress reduction. The expressive effects of creative arts have been shown to have positive effects on mental health as well as public health – which makes it all the more relevant as a self-care strategy for COVID-19. And art therapy is recognized as an evidence-based clinical modality for mental health care. The American Art Therapy Association even has COVID-19 resources for the public, including for families and for mental health providers.

The practice of making arts and crafts to get through hard times also has roots in history – which is hopeful for those of us who are not professional artists or art therapists! The practice of creative “making” can help fill the time and focus our minds in the present moment – maybe with items we already have! – not to mention producing something expressive, beautiful, funny, delicious or useful.

Wherever you draw your creativity from, and whatever form it may take, the act of making creative arts and crafts (and food and music and videos and written works, but we’ll give those their own strategy spotlights down the line!) can definitely count as self-care – and a commitment to self-care is something else I hope you’re all making each day, in small and big ways!

There’s something about the phrase “we’re gonna make it!” that gives a little hope and energy for getting through hard times. Cheers to getting creative in the process!

Peace,

Glynn
